Enrichment and Extracurricular Activities
All Thomas Paine students are able to take part in any of the extra-curricular activities run at Thetford Academy, with a wide range of sports, arts and hobbies available. In addition, the Sixth Form Student Union Committee runs dedicated extra-curricular activities that are only for Thomas Paine students.
Thomas Paine students have access to Thetford Academy’s fitness room after completing an induction with a member of the Sports Department. Other activities on offer include a range of sports, creative arts and performing arts.
We encourage a range of Super Curricular activities that enable students to progress their studies beyond the classroom. Activities include but are not limited to:
- Educational visits and trips
- Wider reading opportunities
- EPQ study
- Specialist workshops and guest speaker programme
- Mentoring and tuition opportunities
Sixth Form Student Union
The Thomas Paine Sixth Form Student Union is led by sixth form students and staff. Sixth Form SU Committee Members hold key roles and contribute to making decisions that ensure that the Student Union takes a leading role in Sixth Form life. The Student Union engages in charitable and community activities and arrange social events too.
Any Sixth Form student can apply to be part of the Student Union Committee and there is a formal interview process for all roles on the committee. Each role has specific responsibilities and offers great opportunities to develop leadership skills. More information is shared with students at the start of each academic year.
"SU is our own personal democratic organisation that allows us to contribute and make decisions on the different aspects of our Sixth Form life. The most effective skill I have gained and that has enhanced my experience is communication skills. The SU has also taught me methods and principles to follow much like adult life post 18."

Leadership Opportunities
There are also other leadership opportunities beyond involvement in the Student Union. Thomas Paine Sixth Form students can also apply to be House Captains and get involved in activities with the main school Thetford Academy students. House Captains act as role models to younger years and are ambassadors for Thomas Paine Sixth Form. There are also opportunities to volunteer in lessons and support in departments.
Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award
At Thomas Paine Sixth Form, we offer students the chance to take part in the Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award. This allows you to learn new skills for work and life, getting fitter, help others and explore the countryside.
There are multiple parts to the award including volunteering, learning new physical skills, a residential and an expedition to the Peak and Lake districts. No previous Duke of Edinburgh's experience is required and training is fully provided. Although there is some cost to taking part, financial support is available, and we provide the necessary equipment for you.
